The Spark

The Spark

In 2017 I left Fort Polk, Louisiana and my family for my fourth deployment to Iraq. The first few months were intense and a 12 shift started and ended in a blink. I would drag myself back to my tent shower talk to my family, watch an episode of whatever tv show I had on my laptop and pass out. Fast forward to my halfway point I moved from northern Iraq to Baghdad and a 12 shift started to slow way down. Out of extreme boredom I watched a video on YouTube of a guy making a saddle and thought it was interesting. The I watched a video about Al and Ann Stohlman (the grandparents of leather craft). From there I found myself looking for the end of YouTube. I watched Don Gonzalez, Aaron Heizer, and Chuck Dorsett. I was hooked! I talked to Alexis about getting into leather craft and at first she wasn’t convinced, I think she went along with it just because I was deployed and bored. I decided I would buy a few tools every paycheck (she was thrilled with the boxes piled up). In May of 2018 I returned  from my deployment and made my first project, it was a “roper” style long wallet with the CVMA logo on it. That wallet was an instant success and I made four more right off the rip for friends.
